Why does StopAd use VPN?
What is Local VPN mode? How does it work?
StopAd filters your browser traffic by blocking requests to phishing and malicious websites and by removing intrusive browser advertising. StopAd can use two modes of traffic filtering. VPN stands for virtual private network and creates a secure, encrypted connection so that no one else, including would-be hackers, can see what you're doing.
Local VPN Mode
Unlike most applications that are engaged in traffic filtering, StopAd does not require root access to your device. In local VPN server mode, StopAd will filter all your traffic and root access is not needed.
Note: Android 5.0 or higher versions are required for this functionality
Can I Trust StopAd’s Local VPN Mode?
The answer is yes.
StopAd's VPN plays a key role in blocking unwanted data; it enables real-time analysis and modification of incoming traffic. For example, if a website sends data that is identified as an ad, our VPN recognizes the request and intercepts the ad traffic before it gets displayed. No proxy servers are involved in the process.
Local HTTP Proxy Mode
In this mode, StopAd launches a local HTTP proxy server on your device. This mode is recommended if you use a rooted device. Otherwise, manual adjustment of an HTTP proxy is needed to use this mode. Furthermore, filtering in mobile networks (Edge/3G/4G) will also be impossible.
